Historical Background

Long ago the Barangay Canelar is the biggest Barangay in Zamboanga City, both in topography and population. Statistically (1987 NSO), it has a population of 22, 251. It has the most number of precincts, having a total of forty-nine voting centers as of congressional election in May 1987.

Situated within the 5-kilometer radius of the city proper, Canelar remains to be highly populated area, yet do not progress as much because certain areas are havens and sanctuaries of lawless elements. These notable areas such as Caburihan and Camino Nuevo interior are a prone threat to the peace and order of the city as a whole.

Barangay Canelar had become too big an area to be handled. Hence, its division became imperative for more efficient delivery of services. On November 25, 1987, Ordinance 77 was enacted by the Sangguniang Panlungsod creating the Barangay Camino Nuevo from the existing Barangay Canelar.

Barangay Camino Nuevo’s territorial extent is defined by the natural boundaries of Gov. Carlos Camins in the north, Veterans Ave. in the east, Gov. Alvarez St. in the southeast, and by the Zamboanga Channel in the west.
