Historical Background

The place Landang Gua of Sacol Island became a Barangay of Zamboanga City upon the enactment of Commonwealth Act No. 39, s. 1937. It is one of the 98 Barngays of the City of Zamboanga.

There are numerous tales about the mystery or origin of Sacol Island. The island is composed of four (4) Barangays, namely: Busay, Pasilmanta, Landang Laum, and LandangGua. The biggest of the four is Barangay Landang Gua. It is our more or less 20 kilometers from point to point.

One of the mysteries or origin of the name Landang Gua tells of a story of a group of people during that time. There are many fish in the island, there are many different fishes.

During the Spanish regime, when they are visiting the island, there are many groups of women who are cooking fish on the seashores. And there was a small fish that the ladies were cooking, and the visitors asked what the name of the fish is, and the ladies replied nicely “Landang-Landang”. And so, it was the beginning of the name of Landang Gua.

Barangay Fiesta Fiestas are not celebrated since the residents are all Muslims.  Instead, festivities are observed during Hariraya Ei'dil Fitri as the culmination of the Holy Month of Ramadan.
