Historical Background

Mercedes became a Barangay of the City of Zamboanga upon the enactment of Commonwealth Act No. 39, s. 1937. It is one of the 98 Barangays of Zamboanga City.

Its old name was “Paso-Caña” because of the abundance of bamboos that grew beside its river banks and in many places.

During the Spanish regime, Mercedes was very abundant with natural resources, varieties of trees, notably mulawin, lumbayao, bacawang, balete and lots of bamboos. There was also an abundance of wild and domesticated animals many of which roamed the swamps and rice fields of sitio Balinsungay in the north eastern part of Mercedes.

People traveled on horses, animal-driven sledges and carts. Most often the people traveled on foot. Some traveled by canoes down the river when there is big flood.
