Historical Background |
The place Salaan became a barangay of the city upon the enactment of Commonwealth Act No. 39, s. 1937. It is one of the 98 barangays of Zamboanga City. There are numerous tales about the mystery connecting the name of Salaan. But the old folks who have been staying at Barangay Salaan state that during their time, people residing there are all farmers and one day the residents are wondering why the water is disappearing even though it is rainy season. So the people went to look for a river or pond where possibly the water has gone. So one day, one of the inhabitants made a study about this phenomenon. So people gathered together and discussed about the drought and one person stood up and told the group that he was able to find out where the water strained. And it strained to Boalan. So the place was named Salaan after the chavacano word sala which means "strained". |
