Historical Background

Barangay Tolosa got its name from the Spanish word "tolos" (or "palos pequienos") meaning a small wooden pole and "losa" (or "pantalosa") meaning plate after one resident placed a pole and a plate on top the hill.  Since then, they named the place "Tolosa".

It became a barangay upon the enactment of Commonwealth Act No. 39, s. 1937.

Desciption

Tolosa is bounded by Barangay Lanzones, sitios under Barangay Salaan, Cacao, Lapakan, Lamisahan and a part of Zamboanga del Norte.  Part of Watershed Area is under the territorial jurisdiction of Barangay Tolosa where wildlife animals and plants with a mountainous area and virgin forest can be found.

It consists of ten (10) sitios: Muti, Tolosa Centro, Bagwak, Lanote, Vista Alegre, Pangulayan, Cotalan, Campo Dos, Imelda and Santa Clara. It has four (4) community chapels under the Culianan Parish, four (4) public elementary schools and one (1) national high school under the Mercedes District.

Seventy-five percent of the working population are farmers, 15% are employed in the government service, while 10% are either employed in the private sector and/or are self-employed.
