Mayor Beng Climaco Tuesday urged residents to report all incidents of child abuse as she reaffirmed her administration’s firm commitment to protect the interest of children.

This, as the City Government through the City Social Welfare and Development Office in partnership with the Break the Silence (BTS) Network: Prevention of Child Sexual Abuse and Exploitation, initiated a Conference on Child Protection with the theme “Multi-Disciplinary Case Management Team: An Effective Mechanism towards Strengthening Child Protection in the Community.”

Climaco said mounting cases of child abuse are reported in the city, thus people particularly, barangay officials, teachers and parents should be aware on how to prevent such incidents as well as how to bring about justice for the victims.

"El govierno local taqui para proteje el interes del maga bata. Pabor reporta todo incidente de bullying, harassment, rape y todo caso de abuso na maga bata", the mayor appealed during the conference that was attended by representatives from all sectors and children’s rights advocates.

She likewise thanked her fellow children’s rights champions whom she worked with when she was in Congress – Dr. Bernadette Madrid and Atty. Katrina Legarda of the Child Protection Network-UP-PGH Manila and General Tanigue, former Chief of Women and Children’s center in Camp Crame, who served as resource persons during the day-long conference held at Centro Latino in  Paseo del Mar.

The event was aimed to build up efforts in addressing the alarming increase of reported child abuse cases in the city.

The conference Tuesday was a follow through of the “Ako Para sa Bata” program held last December and attended by barangay officials, police station commanders, representatives from the academe and other civic groups and organizations advocating for children’s rights. (Sheila Covarrubias)
