The Zamboanga City Anti-Drug Abuse Council (ZADAC) chaired by Mayor Beng Climaco has asked the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) to come up with a directive in the deputization related cases.

Climaco said the anti-drug body in a meeting last Thursday decided to seek DILG guidance after Pres. Duterte relieved the Philippine National Police (PNP) of its anti-drug operations and designated the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) instead to take over the lead role in the raging war on illegal drugs.

The mayor cited the need to deputize the local police force in undertaking the anti-drug campaign to fully implement the laws against the illegal drug trade, noting that there are incidents where PDEA could hardly penetrate drug-infested communities without the support of the police and the barangay officials.

In the meantime, the anti-drugs council had also resolved to utilize the available anti-drug funds of the city government for the training of local police personnel in the handling of drug-related cases.

This, following observation that many drug cases have been dismissed by the courts due to technicalities. Thus, the training is necessary to update the police on latest court rulings with regard to drug cases, especially in the conduct of anti-drug operations, arrest of the suspects and handling of evidence.-(Vic Larato)
