Following the deadly pre-Christmas fire incident in a mall in Davao City, Mayor Beng Climaco has urged businessmen in Zamboanga to strictly comply with fire safety rules and regulations, as she called on the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) and concerned agencies to thoroughly review and monitor compliance of the same.

Climaco said the period for business registration and renewal set from January 3-20 is an opportune time for agencies concerned to make sure that stricter safety rules are functioning in business establishments particularly those operating in multi-story or huge buildings like malls, department stores, hotels and restaurants among others.

She said even after the Kentex factory fire in Valenzuela City in 2015, the city government has advocated for strict compliance of the fire safety laws including regulations in building and construction permits.  “We have had several dialogues with businessmen regarding the installation of sprinklers, fire exits and other fire-safety measures to prevent mishaps.”

It is a must, the mayor pointed out, for business permits applicants to comply with the requirements stipulated in the application form within the specified period, in order to enhance safety measures.

She added that while the local government and other agencies concerned are looking into compliance of the requirements, business operators likewise have the duty and responsibility to make sure that rules are followed to the letter for the safety and protection of the public.

The pre-Christmas fire at the NCCC Mall in Davao City has claimed 38 lives, mostly young call center agents, whose employer was merely renting a space in the said establishment. Investigation on the real cause of the fire is ongoing. (Sheila Covarrubias)
