To show the Local Government’s firm commitment to public safety and security, Mayor Beng Climaco on Monday personally maneuvered a road roller and led the destruction of seized items such as mufflers, video carera machines and firecrackers in public view in front of City Hall Monday morning.

The items crushed were confiscated in series of operations conducted by the City Police Office in coordination with the COMPAC police and the City’s Task Force Ordinance in line with the campaign against open pipe mufflers, illegal gambling and prohibited firecrackers and pyrotechnics the past months.

Flattened and crushed during the public ceremony were 196 mufflers including 36 units of video carera machines and soaked in water were 1,339 assorted firecrackers.

Joining the mayor during the public ceremony were Councilor Josephine Pareja, Council chair of the Committee on Peace and Order; City Police Director PSSupt. Neri Ignacio, Task Force Zamboanga Chief Col. Leonel Nicolas, police station commanders and other city officials.

In her message prior to the ceremony, Mayor Climaco urged law enforcement authorities to continue without let-up all campaigns against all illegal activities most especially on drugs and criminality. She likewise thanked all police and military authorities and all law enforcement units for their efforts in keeping Zamboanga City safe and secure.

The campaign against modified mufflers as well as the drive against illegal video machines and firecrackers and pyrotechnics are based on national and city laws.

Modified mufflers amplify engine noise while video carera machines are used for illegal gambling activities.

The ban on firecrackers and pyrotechnics in the city is based on Ordinance 431 and was an offshoot of the Zamboanga siege in 2013.  (Sheila Covarrubias)
